9th Devlog: Enter The Polish


What to do in polish?

With the whole team entering the polishing phase of our game. We had to keep some rules in mind. We took an existing feature in our game and focused our work efforts on said feature:

  • Match the aesthetic / artstyle of the game.
  • Making sure the feature works 100% as intended.
  • Fixing any issues the feature has or creates in other features.




Adding basic logic.

We all took a step back to look and see what makes sense to have in our game. Small and obvious things such as sounds, and effects can really tie our game together and make things more immersive. As Well as giving it that “finished” look.



What have we done?

We noticed that the sliding feature in our game really had no purpose. There were sections and assets that you can slide under, but you could also jump. There really was no reason for the player to use this feature.

Our solution to this problem was to create a specific asset (A gas tank) that requires the player to slide under. This creates problems for the player, but also opportunity. What we did not want to do is chokehold our players. But at the same time present them with a problem so they themselves can find a solution.



Menus.

The menu is the first thing the player sees when playing the game. This is where our product needs to make a good first impression, as well as show what our game is about. Players will need to have a good understanding of navigating the menu. So creating a clear and innovative menu is essential. While also keeping it visually pleasing and interesting.



Effects:

Some extra particle systems were made. The left image shows speed lines that appear when the player runs at a certain speed. The right image shows a smoke plume that appears when the player comes close.
